I have purchased a USRobotics modem (a real modem, one with a controller) and connected it via an USB port. I am unable to find a way to get it to dial out. lsusb reports it as an installed device, but going to Admin --> Network and setting up the modem connection has no effect. I am very new at this and would appreciate being pointed in the direction of some documentation that would help me fix the problem. I looked at www.ubuntugeek.com/setting-up-dial-up-connection-in-ubuntu.htm, but it was not helpful because it addressed internal, not external, modems; and because there are enough differences between the Ubantu and Gnewsense implementation to render its applicability doubtful, at least to a newbie.

I was also troubled that udev was not available from the command line, that the kernel did not have the CDC ACM driver compiled into it, and that I could not enable the driver with the command "modprobe acm" or "modprobe acm_cdc". All of these would have been helpful, I think

I found this very useful link for all of us who (or want to) use a 56k analog modem:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto

But bear in mind not all drivers are free!
