I tried the vrms software in a command line under gNewSense.
Here is the result :
Non-free packages installed on c-cube-desktop
human-icon-theme Human Icon theme
tangerine-icon-theme Tangerine Icon theme
2 non-free packages, 0.2% of 1277 installed packages.
It seems that I can't remove these packages without having to remove the whole gNewSense desktop.
Are these icon themes really non-free ? I find it quite surprising, considering that human-icon-theme is the default icon theme for Ubuntu.
I've done just a little looking into this also, since I was curious to see what VRMS would say if it was 100% free. Some have said that it is a bug in VRMS and others seem to say that the icon theme art is free to redistribute, but not able to be modified without permission or something of that kind.
I'm not sure what's what, but I'll let you know if I find anything.
I don't even need these icon themes as I don't use them. I don't know why it tries to remove the desktop package as well. Sucks.
fyi gnewsense-desktop is probably just a 'fake' package and would not harm anything if removed...
The Tango, Tangerine, and Human icon themes are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 License Agreement. Some details here: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/ This license allows redistribution and modification. The reason (as far as I know) that VRMS marks them as non-free is Debian had issues with some of the terms forbidding the use of DRM for works under this license. This has now been worked out as far as Debian is concerned so packages under this license are deemed free software.
