Hi, I use gNS (2.2) on my office too and, to have access to an Oracle application with Epiphany (or Firefox), I need a plugin. I receive the following message: application/x-java-applet, jpi-version=1.4.2_06

On the website of Sun, there is a rpm version of: J2RE 1.4.2_06 (includes the JVM technology).

Is there free software? If yes, should I use alien to make a conversion to .deb? If no, any other solution? I did install openjdk-6-jre from gNS sources, but it doesn't work.

Thank for your help! B.

Hello, Bylan.

Read the documentation about using GNU IceCat; there you'll find how to use Java applets in the browser using free software:

http://wiki.gnewsense.org/Documentation/IceCat

Let us know how it went.

Hi sirgazil,

Thanks for your answer.

I follow the documentation to enable the java plugin in Icecat (I dit install Icecat, OpenJDK Java Runtime, and icedtea-gcjwebplugin, and then I did create a symbolic link between the installed plugin and the Icecat's plugin folder, as explain in documentation),

but unfortunately, it still doesn't work.

In addition, I usually use Epiphany. Is it the same plugin for Icecat and Epiphany? Of course, if it work with Icecat, it is also good.

Any other idea to find a solution?

The plugin you installed works for IceCat and Epiphany.

Baylan, when you say it doesn't work, you mean you can't see the Oracle application you need to use or you're saying that you can't see any applet at all?

See for example if you can play the videos in:

Hello sirgazil,

I can play without problems the videos in:http://tinyvid.tv/popular

I just can't see the Oracle application I need to use. I recieve always the same message "additionnal plugins are requiered to display all the media on this page". And when I click on the button, my web browser go to this page: http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/1.4.2_06/index.html

What souhld I do?

I also have some java related problems. My bank doesn't recognize the Icedtea webplugin. Unfortunately i circumvented the problem by installing the propietary java plugin in virtualbox, this is not a solution for me (or for us) so im reading and checking, compiling and recompiling Icedtea to get to the solution, im not a programer btw, just persistent.

hello, I'm not sur, but I think that j2se/1.4.2_06 is also a proprietary plugin. I really wouldt like to contourn this. I still looking for a free solution...

sirgazil18 May 2009, 18:07

Yes Baylan, those are Sun Microsystems' programs, which are not free.

I think IcedTea Java Plugin is the more complete free alternative, so I don't know what else to suggest in this case, sorry :(

Thanks everybody for your help. We don't have solution yet, but one day, free software will catch up in race!
