Hello,
I'm having problems installing gNewSense. I'm new to gnu/linux and this is my first time posting on a forum for help so I'm not really sure what information is relevant( so I'll just give you everything).
I have Windows XP Professional and Ubuntu on one partition and I want gNS on the other partition.
I built my computer only a few months ago, here are the parts I used(in case it's relevant):
CPU- Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz
RAM- Kingston 3x1GB DIMM3
Graphics card- EVGA 896-P3-1267-AR Geforce GTX 260
Motherboard- Asus P6T6 WS Revolution
HD- Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB
Monitors- Hyundai U70A
- Hyundai L90D+
I burned my installation CD with InfraRecorder(I burned it as an iso image at 4x speed. I've made three CDs but I get the error with all three)
When I boot my computer from the CD, I get the black screen with the green text that reads 'gNewSense: Free as in Freedom'. But after I hit enter(as it prompts me to) the screen goes black and then I get this error message:
“[113.051150] usb 4-1: device not accepting address 2, error -71
[119.953358] sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] Assuming drive cache: write through
[119.955107] sd 2:0:0:0: [sda] Assuming drive cache: write through
BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debain 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu12) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
(initramfs)_”
If I enter 'help', I get this list:
“. : alias break cd chdir command continue echo eval exec exit export false getopts hash let local pwd read readonly return set shift times trap true type ulimit unmask unalias unset wait
[ [[ ash awk basename busybox cat chmod chroot chvt clear cmp cp cut dealcovt dumpkmap echo egrep env expr false fbset fdfluch fgrep grep hostname ifconfig ip kill ln loadfont loadkmap ls mkdir mkfifo mknod mkswap mktemp more mount mv openvt pidof printtf ps pwd readlink reset rm rmdir set setkeycodes sh sleep sort stat sync tail tee test touch tr true tty umount uname uniq wget yes
(initramfs)_”
At this point I have no idea what's going on. I just followed the InstallingGNewSense guide but get stuck at this one point every time. I tried googling the error messages but got nothing, and I haven't seen any other topics in the forum that helped with this problem.
If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it. I'm really excited to try out gNS.
Thanks!
Mirax
Hi
You may need to burn a new bootable gnewsense cd. It's always a good idea to download the installation cd with the md5sum to check if the iso image has any errors. In a terminal run: md5sum -c your_gnewsense_md5file.md5sum and if the output says 'ok' or something like it's allright, then you have a error free copy.

Another good idea could be use FUSBi, in order to setup a usb memory stick, so you can avoid some of the CDs, issues that some times happen.
