Seeing plenty of questions on installing and modifying the GNU Icecat, I wrote a documentation on it.
Please have a look at it before asking a question about IceCat.
Also, any correction or contribution is wellcome.

Cool article. I've found if I make a symlink from /usr/local/lib/icecat-3.0.1-g1/plugins to /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9.0.1/plugins I don't have to make and remove links if I switch from Gnash to swfdec for instance.
Unfortunately I can't get the other plugins to show up e.g. Totem. I get this error:
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/totem/gstreamer/libtotem-basic-plugin.so [libxul.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory]
If you feel that it would be helpful to add this article feel free.
Sorry, I meant "add this to the article"
Thanks for the doc. When I go to Tools > Add-ons > Plugins, it lists Shockwave Flash 9.0 r100. I just want to be sure that's swfdec and not something non-free. Am I OK?

hmm, i see the same thing, too. Yet, adobe's flash player is nowhere to be found in my system. So, I'm going to assume it's just a faulty naming on IceCat's side until I can find an adobe flash player component somewhere else.
Good observation, though. It's nice to see people scrutinize freeness of installed software.
Yeah, I'm a bit paranoid, being new to the stickler business. All the other distros I've used, I gave more thought to convenience than freedom. This time I don't want anything non-free to infect my system. :-)
Good Morning. After following all the guideline, to the best of my abilities, I find I still cannot view videos in IceCat. They work well in both FireFox and Epiphany. Any idea what I might be missing? Thanks for your time.

wpurcell, i don't know if this a true factor because this happened to me just once and didn't try recreating the bug, but installing the gstreamer plugins after installing swfdec caused problems. So, you may try removing swfdec and installing needed gstreamer plugins before installing swfdec again. please report back how this turns out.
gnufs: Thanks. It seems to have worked, although I cannot vouch for my methods. I don't think I followed protocol exactly. Anyway, it works! Again, thanks.
I had the same problem @MentalNotes describes, but Mozplugger solved it. Not the best solution for me, since I want to be able to control which plugins I use, but it's better than nothing.
