Hi,
I used the Add/Remove program to install Gnash, and it said that this would enable Ubuntu repositories. I was leery of this because I suspected that I'd start getting updates for all the junk that gNewSense removes from Ubuntu. I'm not sure, but I think I was right: one of the suggested updates is for "linix-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-16-386." Will this re-add the proprietary blobs to my kernel?
There are a bunch of other updates as well, one being "libgif4"; I know the GIF format is proprietary, but is libgif4 free software?
Also, how can I see which repositories are being checked by the Update Manager? There are no options to check. I want to only use the gNewSense ones because I'm not sure if I can trust the Ubuntu ones to show me only free software.
I am a novice, so please explain in novice terms. Thanks!

Anytime you want to install software on a graphical interface (advance mode) use Synaptic (System->Administration*).
The one you're about to install is the gNS version of those modules, AFAIK they're empty, so anything that uses them, will break (mostly non free drivers hardware) see.
GIF patents ended some years ago, not sure if i should call it free, but it isn't a threat anymore.
Again Synaptic, you can browse and edit the repositories, options.
Cheers :)
