hello,

you might want to have a look at

http://wiki.gnewsense.org/Documentation/BootingFromUSB

feel free to ask some more specific question afterwards.

There is an easer way: try http://aligunduz.org/FUSBi/ from gnufs.

Dear Ben & Junichiro, I am completley uninitiated into GNU/Linux and for that matter into Linux in general. Therefore request to advice only the step-by-step guide for simplest and most efficient installation of gnewsense gnu/linux.

As said earlier i hace ASUS eee pc 1000HE which doestn't have optical drive and have preinstalled windows xp home sp3.

Now i want Gnewsense Deltah installed side by side for which i have already downloaded from this site and have kept copies into 1.Hard Drive & 2.8GB Sandisk Pen Drive.

Looking for guidance online, i already had located aligunduz.org and ther was some explanation like i have to install some images & header thing. Its all very bewieldering for me as i am 1.Not a software professional & 2.Least informed on GNU/Linux.Looking back then,i decided only this forum can have best solution to my dilemma, as i dont want to ruin the Windows OS thing by any misstepping while installing Gnewsense Deltah,

I have said all the above just to make my perspectivew and dilemma clear to you, for i am 100% geeky about Linux in general.

Request therefore to patient with me while resolving my dilemma and would be very kind of you to give step by step guide only.

W'Best Regards Ahem

Therefore all i

Ahem,

follow the link Junichiro posted. Just follow that step by step and you should be fine:

Download the .exe by clicking "FUSBI 0.3.1 for Microsoft Windows (x86".

Plug in your USB stick.

Double-click the .exe file and you'll see a window alike to the one on that page.

If you've already downloaded the gNewSense disk image, click the button next to "Diskimage" and then click the three dots at the end of the line. Navigate to where you've downloaded the gNewSense .iso file to and add it (by clicking "Add" or "Open" or double-clicking it).

Then at the bottom of the dialog window, next to "Type" choose "USB drive", then choose your USB drive in the drop-down list next to it. If the USB stick is the only one you've got plugged in, there should be only one in the list.

Then click OK and let the program do it's magic.

I really can't put it any simpler than that. If your confusion stems from something else, and not from the instructions on that page: my apologies :)

You said: "and ther was some explanation like i have to install some images & header thing "

If that's in an error message that comes up after you've followed the instructions/what I reiterated above; you may need to format the USB stick. For that, go to "My Computer", right-click the USB stick in the list of drives and choose "Format". Choose "FAT32" (not sure if it can be NTFS or not), check the box next to "Quick format" and click "Format".

I hope it helps.

Dear Imperium, Did al taht u hav said step by step, even erased pen drive(with eraser software) then formatted into fat32 file type and then followed the sequence as mentioned by u.After that FUSB prompted for reboot; did as instructrd ; computer restarted and pen drive now has folders:Caspers & isolinux plus other files/livecd_version,readme,syslinux,ubnfilel,ubninit,ubnkern,ubnpathl & vesamenu.c32

Pls advice how to go about next. W'Rgds Ahem

Sorry, I just realised I forgot to mention this:

You need to reboot with the USB stick plugged in. However, when the computer just starts up, you have to take a careful look at the screen.

On the screen, you'll see something like "Press (key) for setup or (key) for boot menu".

Press either of those keys (or key combinations in some cases) and see what happens. If the boot menu doesn't give you the option to boot from USB, you need to go into the BIOS (often referred to as "setup" in the boot-up message) and change the boot sequence or maybe some boot options.

Once you boot from the USB stick you'll be taken onto the "Live" environment or installation process, et voilà.

Dear Imperium After entering set up enable 1st boost device to USB-FDD(sandisk cruzer micro 8GB) and also enable boot priority to FDD.Still windows keep coming.Pls advice if somthing still remain to be done

Thanks n Regards Ahem

Without being able to look into your BIOS it's hard to say, of course, but...

(1) try to look again in the device list. A USB stick is often not identified as "USB-FDD" (FDD = floppy disk drive).

(2) Remove FDD's boot priority. Your eeePC doesn't and probably never will have a Floppy Disk Drive :)

The problem I have is that my computers are old (hardware bought in 2005... but it was cheap in 2005 because it was old in 2005!). My main computers don't even support USB booting, unless it's a USB-FDD. A USB stick or USB hard drive doesn't fall under USB-FDD, according to these two BIOSes.

On something as modern as an eeePC, you should be able to find something else than USB-FDD. If you have USB-HD, or anything that could be a USB hard drive or USB stick, try it out - remember, you can always change the settings back if you get it wrong.

I think the only thing that was "hard" about this topic was getting all the stuff correctly on the USB stick; but it seems that it's on there just fine now. So now all that needs to happen is to get the computer to boot from USB.

If all else fails, set all boot priority to anything that has "USB" in the name. Windows is obviously on your hard drive, so put that as the last thing (network boot won't help you much either, though :).

If it supports booting from a USB stick, once you put booting from hard drive as the last boot option it should find and boot from USB.

If it doesn't, that may mean there's something wrong with the files on the USB stick. Try the tutorial again; maybe this time letting the program download the .iso for you. After all, it's 1s and 0s being transferred over a bunch of copper lines - a lot can go wrong.

Good luck with all of that and let us know how you get on :)
