How is the ATI HD 4850 support in gNewSense? Is there a place where I can find out if it works?
Does the radeonhd driver (= non proprietary drviers) support it well? For know all I need is 2d acceleration as I will only begin to use this operating system at the begining of my school year.

Even if you did use a free driver, there are parts of Xorg(I haven't fully looked into) that the developers of gnewsense have determined to be non-free. This excludes the use of 3D on a gnewsense system. This could change, although I don't know.
This might seem like a large sacrifice for you(to not have 3D), but others have made even larger ones in the past for freedom. I'm not going to put you down if you decide to not use gnewsense.
