The Totem Movie Player, the default player in the gNewSense, doesn't recognize subtitle files by default. You can make it automatically show subtitles from subtitle files (such as srt, sub, etc...) with the same name as the video file (except the file extension).

To do this, open the Totem Movie Player in ''Applications > Sound & Video > Movie Player".

Then open Edit > Preferences and in the General tab and enable Automatically load subtitle files when movie is loaded option. You can also choose the font and encoding in which you want the subtitle text to be rendered.
