gNewSense comes with a script that installs libdvdcss. This will enable DVD playback.
Ensure that you have an active internet connection. Then, run this command:
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh
Enter your password when prompted. You will also need to install Gstreamer's ugly set of plugins:
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
Once completed, you should be able to play DVDs.
The default multimedia player in gNewSense is Totem with Gstreamer back-end. However, it may not display DVD menus properly.
To have a more thorough DVD compatibility, you should install Totem with the Xine engine:
sudo apt-get install totem-xine
You run it either by clicking on the Totem (Xine) in the Applications > Sound & Video menu or by entering totem-xine after hitting Alt+F2. Then, choose the Play Disc option in the Movie menu.
gNewSense is a project developed by volunteers all over the world and it's supported by the Free Software Foundation.
