Claws-Mail
Claws-Mail is a lightweight graphical email client, released under the GPLv3. It has been designed to be fast, extensible and robust. It is multiplatform, so you can switch to GNU/Linux more easily.

Note: When composing a message, you may have the following error:
Error Spell checker could not be started. No word lists can be found for the language "en_US".
For this error to disappear, you have to disable Spell checking in claws-mail: Configuration -> Preferences -> Compose -> Spell Checking (many thanks to http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-469783.html).
Emacs+Gnus
Emacs is a powerful and extensible editor from the GNU project. It is licensed under the GPLv3+ and can be used as an email client with Gnus.

Sylpheed is an email client aimed to have a simple user interface, lightweight operation and high reliability. It is multiplatform and released under the GPLv2+ license.

Note: thunderbird has been found to suggest non-free addons, but this issue has been worked on in gNewSense, so you should'nt have this problem in the future.
